At Oakbrook, “preparatory” is not just a part of our name – it is an integral part of our mission. Our goal is to place our graduates in their school of choice. Preparation at Oakbrook begins in elementary school with accelerated curriculum. Formal college preparation begins in 8th grade with a weekly class called College Connect where students prepare for the SAT/ACT, explore careers and interests, visit with college reps, and meet with a faculty adviser for individualized college planning.
Goals by grade level:
- Ninth and Tenth grade:
Course selection emphasizes specific academic needs and goals. Students meet in College Connect class to utilize PrepMe, explore colleges, and use Naviance to identify career interests and match college majors.
- Eleventh Grade:
Junior Seminar initiates the formal college application process with instruction on taking ACT and SAT exams and the general admission process and standards. Each student and parent creates a college plan during an individual conference with the Director of College Guidance. Students are exposed to a wide variety of visiting College Representatives at Oakbrook. PSAT, PrepMe and utilization of Naviance continues.
- Twelfth Grade:
Senior Year College Boot Camp kicks off an intensive time of essay writing and completion of applications for admission, scholarships, and financial aid. Each student works closely with the Director of College Guidance to establish a clear, individualized plan for this final and most important part of the college process.
